Holy Orders Discernment Application Checklist

FIRST! Do you have everything you need?

Before you begin the online submission form, please ensure you have all the appropriate information and documents you need to complete the online submission in one sitting.

You will need the following for your submission:

  • An appointment with the Rev. Canon Rebekah Hatch, Canon for Lay & Ordained Vocations, to talk further about your discernment up to this point
  • Your personal information including name, address, email, and phone
  • Your current parish name and how long you’ve attended, including dates
  • All past parishes & churches you’ve been involved in
  • The date and location, including church/parish name, city, state, and country if outside the US, of your baptism.
  • The clergy who officiated at your baptism.
  • The date and location, including parish name, city, state, and country if outside the US, of your confirmation or reception into The Episcopal Church.
  • The bishop who officiated at your confirmation or reception.

Spiritual Autobiography

Be prepared to upload a 1,000 word spiritual autobiography.

References

  • Name and email of your sponsoring parish’s priest or, if your parish is currently without clergy, a warden
  • Name and email of a lay person from your sponsoring parish

Both references will be asked to reflect, in 500-words or less, on your charisms for ministry, your involvement and engagement in the life of the local faith community, and areas for vocational development and growth.

Be prepared to provide your reference contact information while completing your application. Reference forms will then be automatically emailed to your references upon completion of your application.


Additional Documents Needed

  • Proof of Baptism (certificate, letter from officiating clergy, or letter from witness)
  • Proof of Confirmation or Reception (certificate, letter from officiating clergy, or letter from witness)
  • A resume
  • A headshot-style photo
  • If you have completed CPE, you will also need to provide all relevant paperwork including supervisor evaluation, self evaluation, certificate of completion, transcript, etc.
