Other Side Book Club - WAKING UP WHITE

Trinity Episcopal Church, Torrington
Church of Christ Congregational, 5 Old Middle Street in Goshen (on the Goshen rotary, routes 4 and 63))

On Tuesday May 28 at 7pm, the Other Side Book Club (of Trinity Church) will join the Micah Book Club at the Church of Christ Congregational on the Goshen Rotary (Routes 4 and 63) to discuss WAKING UP WHITE: AND FINDING MYSELF IN THE STORY OF RACE, by Debbie Irving.

Goodreads notes, "WAKING UP WHITE is the book Irving wishes someone had handed her decades ago. By sharing her sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions, she offers a fresh perspective on bias, stereotypes, manners, and tolerance. As Irving unpacks her own long-held beliefs about colorblindness, being a good person, and wanting to help people of color, she reveals how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated her ill-conceived ideas about race. Exercises at the end of each chapter prompt readers to explore their own racialized ideas."

This promises to be a great opportunity to discuss race and white privilege in a safe environment. Consider reading this book and joining us for this discussion. Dare I say, it could be - transformative?
