"The Bishop may establish a Council on Deacons to oversee, study, and promote the Diaconate."
From the Canons of The Episcopal Church, Canon III.7.3
The role of the Deacons Council in ECCT is to support the diaconate in ECCT in a variety of life-giving and empowering ways. Meetings are bimonthly, and open. Contact Bishop Laura Ahrens for more information about attending an upcoming meeting.
Each of the deacons serving on the Council has a specific area which they oversee for the deacons in Connecticut. Some of the areas are overseen by two deacons collaborating together in leadership. At our meetings each Deacon answers the questions, “What question is guiding your ideas?” and “What do you need from the council?”
For your information and contact see below the roles of each of the deacons on the council.
Understanding our Call: Continuing Education and Formation
Continuing to grow and learn is part of our call as Deacons and followers of Christ. Communicate your ideas for continuing education and formation, including webinars, books, articles, programs, etc., to Jessie and Felix for consideration. Examples of continuing education/formation ideas currently being considered include an ECCT Deacons Sacred Ground group and a Community Organizing Training for Deacons.
Building our Community: Connecting to One Another
Deepening our connection to one another is vital to our ministry and our care for ourselves. Don oversees the weekly Monday night Zoom gathering for prayer and good conversation among deacons in ECCT. In addition, if you have ideas for social gatherings or other ways we can build community amongst our holy group, please share them with Don.
Deepening Our Call: Spiritual Resources and Retreats
Our work as Deacons is both fulfilling and draining. Deepening our faith and our understanding of our call is gives us strength for the journey. Spiritual resources, including retreats and quiet days, provide space for this work. Share your ideas for spiritual resources, including retreats, with Pat or Liz.
Sharing our Stories: Communication
As Deacons, we have stories to tell! Diane will be coordinating an occasional Deacons’ Newsletter, along with our Facebook page, and exploring the use of other communication platforms to share our stories. All the members of the Council will be working with Diane to broaden our communication and share our stories across ECCT.
Living our Call: Navigating Connections
One of the greatest challenges we often face in our work as Deacons is deepening the connection of our parish to the broader community and region, including local social service agencies. Contact Bonnie or Ron to share your ideas and to explore opportunities for growth as we seek to facilitate deeper engagement and connection between our parishes, and their community.
