St. Stephen’s presents Scott Joplin: American Trailblazer
Among the performers will be Lynnesha Crump, who was in a recent Metropolitan Opera production of “Porgy and Bess,” and Alexander Wright. Half of the concert will focus on Joplin’s ragtime music, a genre he made popular. On the piano will be composer, arranger and bandleader Joe Block, who has been hailed by Jazz at Lincoln Center as one of “jazz’s most promising young composers.”Additionally guest vocalists will perform selections from Joplin’s opera “Treemonisha,” which was not performed in its entirety until 1972, 55 years after the composer’s death. Joplin was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1976 for the opera and for his contributions to American music. This is sure to enhance your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of Black history!
