Local Rector Celebrates 40 years in Priesthood, St. Ann’s, Old Lyme

June 16 @ 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Saint Ann’s Episcopal Parish invites the public to join the celebration of their rector’s 40th anniversary of her ordination to the priesthood on Sunday June 16. The anniversary will be celebrated in worship at the 8:30 and 10:30 services and at a festive reception following the 10:30 service. The Rev. Dr. Anita Louise Schell was the first woman ordained to the priesthood at Trinity Church Wall Street in 1984 and was one of a handful of women ordained as Episcopal priests the first decade following the July 29, 1974, ordination of the “Philadelphia 11.”
Today women make up half of those ordained to the priesthood each year in the Episcopal Church nationwide. Roughly one third of all Episcopal priests are women. There are almost 4000 female priests and bishops in the Episcopal Church.
There is much to celebrate in this 40th anniversary of Mother’s Anita’s ordination to the priesthood. Please join with her local parish, Saint Ann’s, as they honor her career and her devotion to ministry.
A native of Lancaster, PA, Mother Anita has for over 40 years served in congregations and schools in New York City, Philadelphia, Vermont and Rhode Island. She holds degrees in music, English literature, and world religions from Brown University, and advanced degrees from The General Seminary and The Episcopal Divinity School. Mother Anita describes the “profound joy” she has found in her calling to serve God and follow Jesus in ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church.
