We write to you with some sad news about the deaths of the Reverend Bill Loring and Audrey N. Merrill. Information regarding their services can be found below. We give God great thanks for each of their lives and their dedication to the life and ministry of The Episcopal Church in Connecticut. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servants: The Reverend Bill Loring and Audrey N. Merrill. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive them into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

May the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

The Reverend Bill Loring

May 17, 1937 – February 16, 2024

The Reverend Bill Loring died on February 16, 2024, in Tampa, FL. Father Bill served as Priest-in-Charge at St. Luke’s, New Haven, from 1982-1983. He then served as Priest-in-Charge at St. John’s, Waterbury from 1999-2001. Father Bill was also Clergy Assistant at St. Paul’s, Brookfield; St. Paul’s, Woodbury; St. Thomas’s, Bethel; St. John’s, New Milford; and St. Andrew’s, Milford. He was a participant in the Waterbury Clericus as well as the clergy group at St. John’s, Waterbury.

Father Bill was active in the Anglican Society as editor of The Anglican and was Secretary/Treasurer of the Fellowship of the Way of the Cross. He served on the Executive Council for the Diocese of Connecticut.

A funeral service was held in February at St Clement’s Episcopal Church in Tampa, FL, and can be watched on YouTube. Donations in his memory may be made to any educational place you wish.

Audrey N. Merrill

February 28, 1938 – April 1, 2024

Audrey N. Merrill died on April 1, 2024, with her family by her side in New London, CT. She was born in Montreal, Canada, and in her first year at Central Connecticut Teachers College, she met the Reverend Ralph E. Merrill, who served as chaplain to the school’s Young People’s Fellowship. In 1974, Audrey moved with her family to Waterford from Shelton when Ralph became rector at St. James Episcopal Church in New London.

Audrey was an active member of St. James’ parish and later St. John’s in Niantic. During her time in the area, she worked at Catholic Charities and volunteered both at the New London Trolley Information Center and as a docent at the Lyman Allen Museum.

A service to celebrate Audrey’s life will be held at St. James Church, 76 Federal St., New London, CT, 06320 on April 5, 2024, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either St. James or St. John’s Churches–or, to the Covenant Shelter of New London.
