The Episcopal Church in Connecticut is pleased to welcome Sophia Cowell as ECCT’s Director for Human Resources. Sophia will be continuing on the great work done by ECCT’s current Director for HR, Jean Tomasco, who is retiring on April 23.

Sophia is a human resources professional with experience supporting strategic and day-to-day HR initiatives across diverse sectors, including government, higher education, financial services, nonprofits, and manufacturing. Her work focuses on organizational development, building strong cultures, and equipping employees and leaders to navigate change.

She holds a Master of Science in Organizational Behavior from the London School of Economics and Political Science, a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management from the University of Tennessee, and she is certified through the Society for Human Resource Management.

As ECCT’s Director for Human Resources, she support all HR matters, including developing policies, overseeing talent acquisition and onboarding, managing benefits and leave programs, and guiding employee relations. She provides guidance that strengthens the diocese’s culture and empowers employees to serve faithfully in their ministries.

Sophia looks forward with gratitude to the opportunity to bring her experiences and skills to an organization that is so near to my heart.

“The Episcopal Church has been a pivotal part of my own spiritual formation over the years,” says Sophia, “touching my life at every stage, and it is an honor to support its mission in this role.”

“I’m so excited that Sophia has agreed to come onboard as our new Director for Human Resources,” says the Rev. Ranjit K. Mathews, Canon to the Ordinary. “She will bring a lot of expertise and a particular gift around organizational development, which will be a gift to our staff at The Commons and consqeuently to the broader ECCT.”

Sophia began her work with ECCT on March 31 and has been working closely with Jean Tomasco before she retires.
