Clergy

Bishop Jeff and Bishop Laura spoke at our 2025 Clergy Conference about “Expectations of Clergy,” offering additional clarity as to what is expected of clergy canonically resident and licensed in ECCT.

First and foremost, clergy are expected to live out their ordination vows and adhere to the Canons of The Episcopal Church, specifically Title III, Canon 7 (Of the Life and Work of Deacons) and Title III, Canon 9 (Of the Life and Work of Priests). Clergy canonically resident in ECCT, as well as those licensed are also required to attend the following annual events unless excused by the bishops.

  • Annual Convention
  • Clergy Conference
  • Renewal of Vows

Mandatory Clergy Professional Development is also required once every three years for all active clergy, including retired clergy serving liturgically.

In addition, recently ordained clergy and those serving in new calls in ECCT are expected to participate in diocesan-led colleague groups as scheduled, unless excused by the bishops.

Bishop Jeff and Bishop Laura also expressed their strong desire and hope that each clergyperson, whether canonically resident or licensed, would be intentional about our “common life together” and, while not required, make every effort to attend the following:

  • Clergy Days
  • Spring Training
  • Ordinations
  • Celebrations of New Ministry
  • Clericus/Regional Meetings

Clergy who are engaged in secular employment are reminded to complete the “Secular Employment Form.”

Finally, as a reminder, both deacons and priests are canonically required to pursue continuing education (Canon III.7.5 and III.9.1) and to keep a record of such. Continuing Education reports are due annually on January 31 and can be completed online here.
