Union of Black Episcopalians Ministry Network

An organization of predominately black clergy and laity that advocates for Black Episcopalians and commemorates the lives and ministries of black saints in the Episcopal Church.

Scope: 

An organization that encourages black Episcopalians to be involved in the councils of the wider church, such, but not limited to the Standing Committee, Commission on Ministry, Finance Committee(s), etc.

Meeting and Contact Information:

(Pre-Covid)

  • Regular Meetings: held at Holy Spirit, West Haven
  • Public Events: The chapters organize an annual service commemorating the leadership of the Rev. Absalom Jones, first Black priest in The Episcopal Church. It’s held on a Sunday near his feast day in February.
  • National Events: The national UBE organization holds regional conferences (Connecticut is part of the Northeast Region) and a national conference.

Other Information: The Union of Black Episcopalians is a successor organization continuing a tradition “of more than 200 years of Black leadership in The Episcopal Church.” Locally, there is a chapter in Hartford and one for Southern Connecticut (which incorporates former Bridgeport and New Haven chapters.)

The Southern Connecticut Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians was formed in 2013, following the merger of the New Haven and Bridgeport Chapters.

Steven R. Mullins of Holy Spirit, West Haven is the organization’s first President following the merger.
